DESIGN STATEMENT
Set in the 1960’s, the world of Twelfth Night demonstrates the societal boxes that people are placed in. Olivia’s household follows the strict social structure. The servant are in uniforms. Olivia starts in mourning clothing the once meeting Cesario moves away from the strict black into a maroon trendy dress. Malvolio’s cross gartered confession was inspired by Elvis Presley’s gold suit as an opposite of his strict butler uniform. Maria breaks out more of her uniform with her bright accessories and shoes. On the other side is Orsino who is the extravagant partier. The ensemble acts as the wandering musicians and posse are similar to Orsino. The sailor, Antonio, is dressed in blues and more drab colors to add to his disguised look. Toby and Sir Andrew are in contrasting vibrant garish colors. The Twin are the center of the story. Viola starts in a dress then while hiding as Cesario is in an identical suit to her brother, Sebastian. The play ends with three weddings, Olivia to Sebastian, Maria to Toby, Viola to Orsino. Their wedding dresses reflect each of the brides status in life. Olivia is the most conservative and so is in a traditional wedding dress. Maria is in a short mod dress as she is more on trend. Viola as the character who breaks the gender box of society is in a pant wedding ensemble.
